“Lose yourself in Me, and you will find yourself. Lose yourself in me, and you will find new life.” This beautiful line from one of our popular prayer choruses captures the ‘heart’ of the words of Jesus. To deny oneself, take up the cross and follow the Lord (Lk. 9:23-25), is to simultaneously lose our pride and ego, as we gain humility and a proper sense of self.
It is an identity that gives us a purpose in life, which now takes on a greater meaning. To be a follower of Jesus is to be a proclaimer of life. Every life is perceived as sacred. Every act of love and mercy is meant to promote life. In this mindset, death by abortion, murder, suicide, war, or spiritual death from sin, is to be rebutted. Our Lord gives life, now and forever.
Lord Jesus, You willingly embraced Your cross so that by conquering death, You became the source of new life. Help us to take up our own cross, and in choosing to follow You, may we experience the joys of being alive, and also in promoting life for all people. Amen.
Blessings,
Fr. Howie
