“So that they may all be one” (Jn. 17:21). These words of Jesus speak of a specific type of unity. Jesus said that to see Him is to see the Father. Such was their bond of love. Believers are to be so united and bonded with each other and the Lord, that non-believers should leave our presence with an experience of not just seeing us, but also seeing the Lord.
The prayer of Jesus for us to be one is aimed at our being effective witnesses for Him. Our evangelisation will be stronger when we stand together in our belief, and show a spirit of support and encouragement for each other. When we are able to do this, we give Him thanks. When we fail, then we cry out, “Come Holy Spirit and make us one.”
Lord Jesus, as You are one with the Father and the Holy Spirit, pour Your Spirit upon us so that we may be one in faith, hope and love. May our unity lead to Your glory. Amen.
