Jesus said, “As the Father loves me, so I also love you” (Jn. 15:9). Anyone who knows the love of a father on earth, can ‘simply’ magnify all the good experiences and project them on God our Father. Such is the bond of love that Jesus enjoys. It is not only beautiful, but also it empowers the Son to love friend and foe, because this pleases the Father.
But the sad reality is that many do not know the love of a Dad. This is because the father was too busy, absent after birth or the parents separated. Children who grow with this lack find it hard to either identify God as a “loving Father”, or struggle to love father figures. The vacuum creates overt or passive-aggressive anger. Grace is continuously needed.
Lord Jesus, the love that You and Your Father share is to be celebrated and imitated. Help us to love as You love. Heal the missing father’s love of those on earth. To those of us who are blessed with fathers who love and guide, may we never forget that to whom much is given, much is expected. Teach us how to be patient and forgiving to all. Amen.
