We can all be forgiven if we get distracted with the details of Jonah’s obstinacy rather than the most important part of the story. Jonah’s resistance to God culminated with him being in the belly of the whale for three days. Jesus then leads us into the beautiful ending of the story: despite Jonah’s heartless participation, the Ninevites heard and converted. This then qualifies them to sit with the Lord (Mt. 12:38-42).

Any effort at conversion of self or others, by the grace of God, is to be celebrated. Praise the Lord who desires not our condemnation, but our eternal salvation.

Lord Jesus, like Jonah being in the belly of the whale, You were in the belly of the earth for three days. But Your resurrection reveals a new power. It invites repentance from sins that lead to death, conversion that effects new life, and joy in serving You - our living God. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
