The mystery and importance of blood has been part of our spiritual consciousness from the dawn of time. Blood is shed when animals are killed to be eaten or foes are conquered. Purification and blessing rituals involved the sprinkling of blood. It is invaluable.

Our Judeo-Christian tradition also embraces the reality of blood. “From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah,” to the prophets and Apostles killed (Lk. 11:47-54), the shedding of the blood of Jesus is the ultimate source of God’s mercy and our salvation.

Could God have saved us without allowing His only Son to be murdered? God can do all things and He certainly could have saved us differently. But our innate approach to blood - for good or evil - is used by God for our redemption. Thank the Lord for His blood.

Loving Saviour, we thank You and praise You for Your blood that was shed on Calvary’s cross for the forgiveness of our sins. May our gratitude for Your sacrificial love be evident in our avoiding sin and walking in the ways of holiness. Amen

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
