On this Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus, we rejoice with them in hearing our Lord declare, “I am the resurrection and the life” (Jn. 11:19-27). Each of them experienced a new awareness of the Lord’s power in their lives:

* Martha’s mindset was elevated to understand that activism is necessary and good. When it distracts from spending quality time with the Lord and listening to His voice, then even our activities can become idols that prevent our spiritual growth.

* Mary’s heart was strengthened when Jesus affirmed that she chose the better part to sit at His feet (Lk. 10:38-42). By listening to Him, she did not get discouraged by the views of Martha, or the comments and attitudes of other people.

* Lazarus was called out of the tomb by the Lord from death to life. His resuscitation was a true miracle. It is significant to note that it was not Lazarus who asked to be raised from the dead, but the cries of Martha and Mary who petitioned the Lord.

Like Martha, Mary and Lazarus, we too are invited to listen to our Lord and respond to His words, which impart a greater consciousness to right living and growth in grace. What the Lord did for these three Saints, He can and will do for each of us.

Lord Jesus, may Your teaching guide us into becoming better people. As we choose to sit and listen to Your voice, may we continuously experience renewal in our minds and hearts. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
