Jesus declares, “The seed is the word of God” (Lk. 8:11). But as seen in the parable and its explanation (Lk. 8:4-15), hearing the word is one thing, understanding and bearing fruit is quite another. Since human beings operate with different levels of formation, intelligence, interpretation and derived conclusions, Jesus knew we would need help with hearing the word. So He gave us His Spirit who guides us in all truth (Jn. 16:33). This Spirit was given to the Disciples formed by the Lord, who were tasked to ‘hear’ and interpret the word of God. But human ego and limitations gave rise to many interpretations. These conclusions have resulted in the formation of varied views and denominations. How do God’s people still bear good fruit based on the word? Jesus gives the answer, “embrace it with a generous and good heart” (Lk. 8:15). Love conquers all. Lord Jesus, fill us with Your Spirit of truth to help us to listen to Your word, understand and bear fruit for Your kingdom. Where differences arise, let love for You and all prevail. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
