Jesus refers to Isaiah in today's gospel (Mk. 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23), stating that people honour the Lord with their lips, "but their hearts are far from me".

Three insights about the heart:

1. Every heart, because it is created by God, can love and choose to do good. But each heart, given free will by God, can hate and choose to do and spread evil.

2. The company we keep can either help our hearts to grow in love and light, or drag us down into darkness.

3. The surest way for our hearts to please God is to surrender ourselves to Him, and "love Him with all our heart".

May the state of our hearts always reflect the goodness of our God.

Lord Jesus, You remind us that in order for us inherit eternal life, we must love You with all our heart. Shape out hearts by Your grace, so that our lives may radiate Your love. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
