What is our response when the Word of the Lord comes to our ears? We can react in three ways. First, we can allow this Word to become part of our lives and serve as a basis to bear good fruit for the Kingdom. Second, we can remain indifferent to the Word, which will only result in our non-growth and failure to inspire the people in our lives.
Third, we can imitate the people described in today’s gospel (Mt. 17:9-13). Like them, our third response is to react with anger and violence. Both John the Baptist and Jesus called the people to repentance. But in pointing out the peoples’ sins and weaknesses, they were killed. Only those who respond in the first way, of living by the Word, will grow.
Loving Lord, as we wait with expectant hope for Your triumphant return, may we be among those who choose to allow Your Word to shape and transform our lives to be better sons and daughters. May our repentance be evident in not only turning away from sin, but also in the deepening of our relationship with You, as we walk in Your way that leads to life. Amen.
