If working for the Lord brings consolation in this life and hope for the life to come, why are there so few workers? Even Jesus recognised the scarcity of labourers (Mt. 9:38). We all know the harvest is abundant, and many often overwhelm the few labourers who heard and responded to the call of the Lord, yet still the labour force remains small. How can we join the ‘legion of the Lord’ and encourage others to do the same? Believers must be attuned to the voice of our God, who calls and equips each of us with gifts for specific tasks, whether ‘front-line’ or ‘supportive’ roles. When both sets of workers are in tandem, there is not only a resolve and encouragement to get the job done for God’s glory, there is also strength to face cynicism, competition and opposition (Mt. 9:34). Today, pray to the Lord of the harvest for workers to embrace our roles. Loving Father, send labourers into the ready harvest. May each of us respond to Your calling, and work diligently to accomplish the tasks You place in our hands. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
