The example of parents sets the stage for the dramatic life of their child. Both Elizabeth and Zechariah were not only prayerful and submissive to God, they also listened and obediently responded to the Lord’s command to name their child ‘John’ (Lk. 1:57-66, 80). These are the spiritual values they passed on to John that made him a fiery prophet of God. It is true that some parents have been saints, and have been inspirational examples of faith to their children, only to watch in pain as their children go astray. What can be done? Keep believing in the loving power of God and pray for your children. As with John the Baptist, God has a plan that seeks to save and draw all to Himself. Trust in the Lord. Loving Father, You call us to listen and respond so that we can be saved. Make us Your holy instruments so that we can share Your good news of salvation with others. Amen.
