Lenten Bytes

Lent is a season of grace that invites us to do something for our own spiritual advancement, and make a difference in the lives of others. In a culture that often glorifies destructive words and actions against others, we can choose to be ‘Rueben’ in the midst of negative conversations and intentions. In the first reading, we hear how Joseph’s brothers had allowed their jealousy and anger to take such a strong hold of them, that they plotted to kill him. But Rueben chose to change the conversation from killing to locking away. Rueben’s intention was to rescue Joseph (Gn. 37:3-28).

There was no ‘spirit’ of Rueben in the gospel parable (Mt. 21:33-46), hence the intention of the tenants to kill the son of the landowner was completed. May we who follow Jesus our light, choose to be ‘Rueben’ and bring His light to darkness. Lord Jesus, may Your love empower me to courageously bring Your light to conversations and people who live in darkness. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
