Lenten Bytes

Are we truly growing in the spiritual life? Lent is a graced time to grow in our faith. We are called to practise denial of self (Mt. 16:24), and move from being a child to becoming an adult in God’s ways. Jesus not only commands us to love, but He also gives us the standard of measurement. Showing distance or retaliating against our enemies may be a spontaneous desire which is sometimes displayed in our negative actions and words. Disciples of Jesus however are held to a higher mark. He tells us to “love our enemies, and pray for those who persecute you” (Mt. 5:44). This injunction separates the infant from the adult. Lord Jesus, may Your grace help me to mature in Your ways, so that I may move away from infantile mentalities and truly live as an adult whose choices and lifestyle lead to Your glory. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
