As limited human beings, we will never truly be perfect. We can try and aim for perfection, but our weaknesses — if not in action then in attitude; if not in word then in thought — will keep perfection a goal to be constantly achieved, but always just out of our reach.

Jesus tells us to be perfect (Mt. 5:48). However, this is to be understood in the context in which our Lord spoke. Our perfection should be evident in not just loving our family and friends, but also loving our enemies and those who make life difficult (Mt. 5:43-48).

To love everyone as we are commanded, is the closest we can get to being perfect.

Loving Father, Your love is perfect. You allow the sun and rain to bless the saint and sinner. Pour Your Spirit upon us, so that we may imitate Your perfect love, and prove ourselves to be sons and daughters in whom You are well pleased. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Howie
