Sometimes, the way we image God our Heavenly Father is based on the experiences we have of our earthly fathers. Those who have had fathers who were gentle, compassionate and understanding, will project these characteristics on to our God. However, those who either grew up without fathers in the home; or whose fathers related in mean, harsh or angry ways, will find it a struggle to relate with a ‘loving’ Father.
Jesus highlights the true image of God our Father in today’s gospel (Lk. 11:5-13). He paints a picture of a Father who is never tired or bothered by His children who persistently come to Him in prayer. He not only listens to our cries, but He also never fails to provide ‘good gifts’ to all. Any good we encounter in our earthly fathers is magnified and multiplied in our God. Any deficiency in our earthly fathers serves as a conduit to draw close to Him.
Loving Father, may we never hesitate to draw close to You, because in Your presence there is fulness of love, joy and peace. May the worship and praise we offer as Your children be accepted by You for Your glory. Amen.
