The last line in today’s gospel (Lk. 7:18-23) is interesting, “Blessed is the one who takes no offence at me.” Why would our Lord make such a statement? He who came to teach, heal and save us is fully aware of what it means to be human. We quickly embrace words that are complimentary and motivating. We love the positive.
But because we are a people on a journey, we all have the propensity to either embrace the light of God to live the good, or choose to yield to the darkness of sin. When our Lord does the loving action of pointing out our sins and calls us to repentance, do we take offence and resist, or do we humbly respond? The answer has eternal consequences.
Loving Lord, You speak and we are brought into life. You act and we are healed. You point out our sins so that we can change and grow in holiness of life. May we come to appreciate the truth that all that You say and do is not only for our current benefit, but also for our future glory with You in Your heavenly kingdom. Amen.
